Bha ra tambe

Poet

Rajkavi Bhaskarrao Ramchandra Tambe

Maharashtrian and those who read and speak Marathi do not require any introduction of Bha Ra Tambe.

Similarly, just a few lines viz.  jana pal bhar mhantil, madhu magashi majhya sakhya pari, re hind bandhava thamb ya sthali, or tujhya gala majhya gala instantly induce the entire verse, or even the entire poem in response.

If you are in Mumbai, do not be surprised if a non-Marathi Mumbaikar says …………

Oh, this was taught to me in Marathi when I was in class 6th / 7th

OR

Arre ye to school ke liye ready hote time pados ke radio pr Mumbai B me bajta tha. Kya meaning full song likha tha, aapke Marathi Bha Ra Tambe ne. Mujhe aaj tak yaad hai ye song. Mera favorite.

That is how close his poetry is to the Marathi and Non-Marathi Maanas.

No wonder ‘Rajkavi’ Bha Ra Ta is remembered as:

  • A linguist who wrote in Marathi, Sanskrit, Hindi, English and Urdu. Robert Browning is said to have been amongst his favorite English poet.

  • A Marathi poet who had profound knowledge of Hindustani Classical Music. Elders told us he could discuss nuances of Hindustani Classical Music with likes of Pandit Gune and other greats of his time. In return those stalwarts would sing his poems. No wonder, in most cases he has recommended the ‘raag’ that would be apt to convey the meaning of his poems. More-over the stanzas are written in a meter that allows composers to experiment with tune, rhythm, background etc. as they think would suit the lyrics.

  • A legend who thought and wrote differently than his contemporaries.

  • A ‘samskara’ blessed by Goddess Saraswati who conveyed a range of human sentiments through his writings.

  • One who portrayed love and affection, melancholy and sorrow, romance and playful innocence, past and future linked to philosophy of life in simple words.

  • The one who inspired Poets and Writers of his time.

  • While many know his published poems by heart a similar number of scholars can recite his un-published poems!
